Phezulu Packaging ,  a turnkey auto ID solutions provider that’s making increasing inroads into the colour self-adhesive label market, located in Robertsham , South of Johannesburg has chosen to add a  RSC VLF-330 inspection rewinder.

When Phezulu Packaging director, Colin Roux decided to invest in new slitter inspection rewinders to strengthen the company’s position and service in the multimillion-rand colour self-adhesive label market, Rotocon came to mind.

‘The service we have received from Rotocon has been consistently reliable and the products installed have always delivered,’ says Colin. ‘Of course, it is important to consider all the options, but we had no reason to go elsewhere, as Rotocon matches its performance with a price that is around 30% to 40% lower than that of competitors.’

Phezulu Packaging’ Johannesburg operations manager, Jacques van Jaarsveld, adds that the RSC VLF-330 offers a full suite of standard features in an economical, compact package designed for operator ease. ‘The machine is so simple to operate that it was installed on a Wednesday and was fully operational by the Thursday, running then at a speed of about 200m/min. In addition, the Erhardt + Leimer (E+L) SmartScan inspection feature requires minimal machine handler training because of its ease of use and one-touch set-up compared to around five steps for comparative machines.’

Jacques goes on to explains that the machine features a cartridge slitting system, vertical inspection zone and automatic tension control, with an S-drive servo/software control system on the unwind, rewind and draw stations.He adds that the self-explanatory icons on the moveable operator console are a doddle to interpret.

The system promises slitting accuracy of around 0.2mm on web widths of 340mm, 440mm and 540mm. Its on-board unwind capacity is 800mm and rewind capacity, 500mm. Tension control is fully automated, including acceleration and deceleration– allowing the machine to reach running speeds of up to 320m/min.

This technical and maintenance assistance aspect is extremely important, says Colin. ‘If something goes wrong, I need to know that I can send a message or pick up the phone and get an immediate response.’

He adds: ‘This latest buying decision was based on our need to create efficiencies and resolve the bottleneck in our label finishing. It is part of an ongoing factory upgrade that has necessitated significant investments in both digital and flexographic label manufacture. And reflects our continued commitment to sourcing state-of-the-art equipment to keep Phezulu Packaging at the cutting edge of the market.’
